Learning Objective
Upon completing this lesson, you will be able to add categories, products, and modifiers, and explain and configure the settings available at each level. The Company Menu is considered the master menu, which provides information to each of the Store Menus. Categories, products, and modifiers are built within the Company Menu.
Core Learning
Accessing Company Menu Admin
- Login to Dashboard at https://my.olo.com.
- Click on the "Menu" tab on the left side of the screen.
- Select the "Manage Menus" option, and you will be taken to the Company Menu and Store Menu options.
Adding Categories
After accessing the Company Menu, you can begin adding categories. Click the "Add Categories" button.
- A Name is required, this is what the customer will see. An Internal Name is optional and can only be viewed within Menu Admin. A category description is also optional.
- Alcohol Status can be indicated if all of the products within the category are classified as alcoholic beverages.
- Preparation times or Lead Time Strategies can be calculated in two ways: Order Make Time and Quote Time. Order Make Times are calculated based on category level requirements, Make Time Calculation. Quote Time is set within Olo at an administrative level and can be set by your Project Manager or Specialist.
- A Make Time calculation and Prep Time Minutes are required for each category. You can refer to the articles on make times below for more information on these options.
- Hit Save to add the new category to the menu.
Additional category fields
Once the categories have been added to the menu, any category can be edited, to configure any of the following additional fields.

Adding Products
Once categories are built, the next step is to add products to them. Click on "Add Product(s)" under the appropriate category. By default, the table has five rows, and the maximum number of rows is 250.
- A Name is required, this is what the customer will see. An Internal Name is optional and can only be viewed within Menu Admin. A product description is also optional and customer-facing, often used to explain the product.
- Base Cost is only required for brands that are not integrated to a point of sale (POS), for example, brands exclusively using our Expo Standalone product. POS Integrated clients can skip this step since pricing will pull directly from the POS.
- Checking the $0.00 Warning box helps flag items that should never be priced at $0 and prevent accidental menu inaccuracies, refer to the article in Explore More! on $0.00 warning.
- POS Integrated clients can select the POS Entity Type and POS Mapping ID for the product. You can review this in more detail within Part 2: Menu Mapping of the Menu Training Series.
- By default, only a limited number of columns are displayed in the table. Use the Show Details button to view additional columns within the table; Minimum Quantity/Quantity Increment, Restaurants can change base cost?, Alcohol Status, and Handoff Mode.
- Hit Save to add the new category to the menu.
Additional product fields
Once products have been added, they can be opened to configure additional fields.
- Maximum Quantity/Minimum Basket Quantity/Maximum Basket Quantity: The quantity fields can be left as-is unless you would like to specify quantity requirements for a product (for more information on these fields, refer to the article on Setting Quantity Requirements/Restrictions below in Explore More!).
- Feature Status: Checking this box can designate products as promotional/featured items.
- Menu product visibility - Modifier(s) included: These filters help designate the platforms on which the product should appear.
- Base Calories/Max Calories: Indicate calories for the product (for more information on the calorie fields and updating calories, refer to the articles on calories listed below)
- Handoff Mode: Multiple columns let you select the handoff modes for the product. Uncheck any handoff mode that does not apply for the product (Note: handoff modes can also be controlled at the store menu level).
Adding Modifiers
Once you built your products, you can add modifiers to them. You have the option to reuse existing modifier groups or make copies and assign them to other products.
- Locate the product you would like to create a modifier group(s) for, and click on "Modifiers".
- On the next screen you will see two columns; Selected Product Modifiers and Available Modifiers, click on Add New Modifier under Selected Product Modifiers to create your new Modifier Group.
- Add your settings to create the group, click Save. You don't need to add all settings immediately, you can always come back and edit after saving.
- A Description/Instruction (modifier group name) is required, this is what the customer will see. An Internal Description is only viewed within Menu Admin and is highly recommended to be added.
Example:
Description/Instruction - Choose Your Sauce
Internal Description - Choose Your Sauce (Salads) or Choose Your Sauce (65474)
- Explanation Text is optional but can be used to provide a further description of the modifier group.
- If modifier quantities need to be entered for the modifier group, select Yes under Support Modifier Quantities and add the Modifier Aggregate Quantity (minimum/maximum for the sum of all choices) and the Min/Max Modifier Quantity (minimum/maximum for each individual choice).
-
Under the question "How many modifiers can the customer select from this group?", you have the following options:
Single: The customer is required to select exactly one option from the group.
Multiple: The customer can select zero or more options from the group.
Unlimited: The customer can select zero or as many options as they want from the group.
Set a limit: The customer can select a number of choices within a specified minimum and maximum range. For more information on setting these limits, refer to the article in Explore More! on Modifier Quantities.
Increments: The customer can select a number of choices by increment value, for example, by 2, 5, 10, etc.

Adding Modifier Choices
After creating a new modifier group, click "Edit" to go back into it. By default, you'll see a screen to bulk-add choices. You can either use that feature or follow the steps below to add one choice at a time.
1. A Name is required, this is what the customer will see.
2. Price is only required for brands that are not integrated to a point of sale (POS), for example, brands exclusively using our Expo Standalone product. POS Integrated clients can skip this step since pricing will pull directly from the POS.
3. Checking the $0.00 Warning box helps flag items that should never be priced at $0 and prevent accidental menu inaccuracies, refer to the article in Explore More! on $0.00 warning.
4. POS Integrated clients can select the POS Entity Type and POS Mapping ID for the product. You can review this in more detail within Part 2: Menu Mapping of the Menu Training Series.
5. Enter (optional) Base/Max Calories.
6. Default? can be selected if you want a choice preselected for the customer.
Editing an Existing Modifier Choice
After creating a new modifier choice, click "Edit" (pencil icon) to go back into it. You can modify or add settings per choice.
Adding a Choice Modifier (Nesting)
Nesting modifier groups means placing one modifier group under a specific modifier choice. This can be done to create a specific ordering flow on the menu or to meet POS or kitchen requirements.
For example, a "Choose your salad dressing" modifier group could be nested under a "Farmhouse Garden Salad" choice in a "Sides" group. When the salad is not selected, the dressing modifier group will not be visible on the menu.
Have you finished learning about Company Menu Admin? Go to Part 2: Menu Mapping if you are a POS integrated brand. Non-POS integrated brands can skip straight to Part 3: Store Menu Admin.
