Configuring Donations on the Menu


There are several ways you can encourage your customers to donate to a cause or an organization using your Olo menu. Prior to getting started, there are a few things to note regarding the setup of donations:

  1. Restaurant brands are responsible for ensuring that appropriate agreements are in place with the causes/organizations that the donations are being directed to

  2. Restaurant brands are responsible for setting up the donation items as non-taxable items

  3. Reconciliation of donations is handled entirely outside of Olo

  4. While Olo can offer ideas on how the donations can be set up (outlined below), brands are fully responsible for ensuring donation items have been tested, and the appropriate names and descriptions are being used when these items are added.

 
Ways to set up donations

 

Add a donation-specific category and create donation items in this category

You can create a category within the Olo Company Menu to specifically contain donation items. The category could be named after a specific organization or cause that your brand would like to donate to (ensure your brand has an agreement with the organization to be able to name the category as such), or can be labeled generically (eg: 'Donations'). Within this category, you can set up specific donation items customers can add to their cart in the form of dollar amounts, food items, etc. POS integrated brands must map the donation items to the appropriate entity type and POS ID within the menu, and ensure that appropriate pricing has been set for each donation item. Menu images can be added to donation items as well.

In the example below, the category has dollar amount items that customers can add to their cart when checking out with their orders.

Please note that the screenshot above is based on the new responsive ordering experience, also known as Serve. However, categories and items can be set up in the same manner on the existing ordering experiences as well.

 

Add donation items to all or specific categories

You can add donation-specific items to all of your menu categories or some menu categories. The donation item can be placed as the first item within each category, for visibility, and to also encourage customers to select the donation item(s). POS integrated brands must make sure to map the donation items to the appropriate entity type and POS ID within the Olo menu, and all brands must ensure that appropriate pricing has been set for each donation item. Menu images can be added to the donation items as well.

In the example below, the donation item was placed at the top of the category, making it easily visible to customers and encouraging them to add it to their cart.

Please note that the screenshot above is based on the new responsive ordering experience, also known as Serve. However, donation items can be set up in the same manner on the existing ordering experiences as well.

 

Add donations as modifiers to products

You can add donations as modifiers to your menu items so customers can opt into a donation as they are ordering food. POS integrated brands must make sure to map the donation modifiers to the appropriate entity type and POS ID within the Olo menu. Brands must also make sure the appropriate pricing has been set for each donation modifier.

In the example below, the donation modifiers allow customers to select any donation amount as they add an item to their cart.

Please note that the screenshot above is based on the new responsive ordering experience, also known as Serve. However, donation modifiers can be set up in the same manner on the existing ordering experiences as well.

 

Add donations as upsells

Using the upsell tool, customers can be prompted to add a donation to their cart as they prepare to checkout with their order. Click here to learn more about upsells. For the donation items to be added to the upsell tool, each donation must be entered as a product within the Olo Company Menu. And then, in order for the upsell to appear, the upsell items must be added to each store menu.

To get the donation items added to the upsell tool, submit a request to the Menu Team with the information outlined below:

  • Brand name
  • Name(s) of Upsell Group
  • Item(s) that should be added to each Upsell Group 

With the new responsive design and with mobile web, if an image has been added to the item being upsold through the Menu Image Management tool, then the product image will appear above the item in the basket viewer. If you would like an image added to the upsell tool (only one image can be added) on the existing desktop site, please submit an image with the following specs:

  • Accepted file types: .png
  • Recommended dimensions: 300x189px
  • Required resolution: 72px
  • Background must be transparent

Please note that the screenshot above is based on both the mobile web experience as well as the new responsive ordering experience known as Serve. However, upsells can be set up in a similar manner on the existing desktop ordering sites as well.
