Add Internal Names/Descriptions for Categories, Products, and Modifier Groups

Using the Internal Name field at the category or product level, or the Internal Description field at the modifier group level, you can easily add a non-customer facing name or label to your categories, products, and modifier groups, making it easier to differentiate them internally within Menu Admin against other similar categories, products, and modifier groups. The internal name will only be seen by menu managers who have access to the Olo company and/or store menu, and will never be seen by your customers.

Category Example Product Example Modifier Group

One category contains salads that are offered during lunch hours and the other category contains salads offered during dinner hours

The first Chicken Bacon Pizza item applies to branded ordering channels, whereas the second item was built specifically for the Rails menu

Instances when internal names/internal descriptions should be used:

  • Categories, products, and modifier groups that are applicable only to specific stores. For example, a Sicilian Pizza that is only applicable to stores in the east coast should be labelled with "Sicilian Pizza (East Coast)"

  • Categories, products, and modifier groups that should only be offered on the menu during certain parts of the day. For example, a salad category containing salads that are offered during lunch hours should be labelled with "Salads (Lunch)". Once labelling is complete, you can go into the store menu and set up availability hours, days, and dates for the category, product, and modifiers.

  • When a category contains products that are specific to Rails partners, or when products and modifier groups are built out specifically for Rails. Once you label the categories, products, and modifier groups internally, you can use menu filters to filter categories, products, and modifiers for Rails partners.

  • Brands integrated to Aloha, Brink, or Revel should always label the modifier groups based on the modifier group ID that the choices within the modifier group are mapped to. For example, if the choices within a Choose Side modifier group are mapped to modifier group ID 10103, the internal description of the modifier group should say "Choose Side (Mod 10103)".

When building and mapping modifier groups within the Olo menu, you need to pay attention to the modifier groups that have been assigned to the item within the POS, and labelling the modifier groups will help you review that the correct groups are being assigned to the item within the Olo menu. It will also help when you want to reuse a modifier group between items.

  • POS integrated brands that are not integrated to Aloha, Brink, or Revel and non-POS integrated brands should always label modifier groups based on the product that the Olo modifier group was built for. For example, a modifier group containing customization options for a Salmon Dinner should be labelled "Customize (Salmon Dinner)". Labelling the modifier groups will help you review that the correct groups are being assigned to the item within the Olo menu, and will also help when you want to reuse a modifier group between items.

  • If you are a brand using multiple POS integrations, categories, products, and modifier groups that are mapped to each integration should be labelled accordingly. This will, for example, prevent you from adding an Entrees category that was built specifically for the Toast integration to a store that is on Aloha. The Entrees category that is Toast specific should be labelled "Entrees (Toast)" and the category that is Aloha specific should be labelled "Entrees (Aloha)"
