When placing delivery orders, your customers have the option to provide additional dropoff instructions when building the basket for dropoff information or during checkout. This field can be used to indicate if:
- Contactless: The order needs to be left at the door
- Directions: The driver needs specific directions about how to deliver the order if they live in an apartment building
- Call First: Requests to call the customer before coming to the door
If you are using Dispatch, we pass customer dropoff instructions to our Delivery Service Providers. If you are using in-house delivery drivers, these details will show up in the Olo Dashboard. The maximum character length for this field is 128 characters.

If you are using a custom-built front-end, the special instructions field is also passed in our ordering API for Delivery and Dispatch handoff modes. Check out the baskets section in Handoff, Delivery & Dispatch in our API explorer and work with your agency partner to make sure you are using and displaying that field on your ordering platforms to input customer preferences.
